Balance

While I keep reading Mastery , in the attempt to memorize it , I wonder. Am I going to lose my  appreciation for some of the simple things that life offers?  In our never ending journey for mastery are we going to push ourselves too far. Maybe miss a sunrise or skip some quality family time to complete something on our list. I know that this shouldn't happen , but it's  tough , not getting caught up in the quest for numbers. Looking back at last year I see it happened to me on more than one occasion. A better effort at appreciating life's simple pleasures is going on my to do list. Maybe that's why I named my blog My Balancing Act even though right now there's not much balance.

Consistently

Very excited about learning 2 new forms this year. Lao Gar and Tai Chi broadsword although they both feel different in stances and technique to what I have learned in Kung Fu so far. This added with the fact that I would like to grade means I have an extraordinary amount of work to do.

Realistically ,is it possible to all of that in the amount of time I have? I am not convinced it is but , this won't be the first time I did not think something was possible and tried to achieve it anyway. Our required memorization of Mastery by Stewart Emery states that in the first few sentences.  "Mastery is a product of consistently going beyond our limits."  Scary if you really think about it. Consistently is the key and probably the hardest one.

Random Thoughts

Time has flown by this last week. A new year with a new team , new forms to learn and hopefully succeed at. Feeling pretty good but still a little scared.    I am reading the book Peace Is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh it's fantastic .I've been trying to implement some the ideas the book discusses , with a little difficulty.  This book is a definite must read and I haven't even reached half way.

A Great Debate

My family had a great debate over dinner. The topic was Random Acts of Kindness. "Suprisingly" we all had different views on the topic. James , who is 10 , figures that the acts are  no longer random if we force the act. If we only act  because we want to record it , it is not random. Shelly's opinion was that the majority of RAK's are just common courtesies.

After being in the I Ho Chuan for one year I ask myself the same questions and have the same feelings. The only difference is my experience with it, I believe that it is our perception of the act. Did we reflect on the day and realize the good we did , or did we force ourselves to hold a door or let some one in in  traffic. Not so random.

Either way , I believe that the recording of them move us to be a better , more awakened person.  I think it has more to do with our "intent" of the act ...  our reason for doing what we did.

If we make a record of the acts we did, whether we'd consider them courtesies or random, is it not a move in the right direction. The more we are aware of our actions and intentions the better we become.

Are we more awake , aware , conscious of why we do what we are doing,  or who we are doing it for. Or are we forced to do it out of obligation to meet a requirement and is either way more worthy than another?

Any feedback would be appreciated.
